Doris Esther Nelson (age 83) of Wellington Kansas, formerly of South Dakota, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at the Riverview Manor in Oxford, Kansas. Doris was born the daughter of Peter and Freda (Stolenburg) Scherer in Watertown, SD on April 5, 1928. She graduated from the Watertown High School. Doris was united in marriage to Howard Dale Nelson on October 23, 1947 in Huron, SD. The couple moved to a farm North of Henry, SD in April of 1948. Howard farmed; Doris drove school bus for 18 years. Together they moved to Spokane in 1978. While in Spokane, Doris worked for the Eagles Aerie #2 for over 15 years. In 2001, they became snowbirds, going to Arizona for the winter months and returning each summer to Spokane. In 2007, they moved to Wellington, Kansas to live with their son, Doug and his family. Doris enjoyed camping, playing dominos, cards, and needlepoint. Surviving to honor her memory are her sons, Harlan (Phyllis) Nelson of Spokane, WA, and Doug (Teresa) Nelson of Wellington, KS; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and her brother, Edwin Scherer of Napa, CA. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard Dale Nelson on October 17, 2008; her sister, Margaret Hansen; and a grandson, Brent Nelson. Memorial service will begin at 10:00AM on Monday, April 16, 2012 at RIPLINGER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY 4305 N. DIVISION, SPOKANE, WA with interment immediately following the service at Pleasant Prairie Cemetery. Please join family and friends for a reception following the graveside service at 9514 E.
